Sleep Apnea Treatment in Ottawa, Ontario

Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder that negatively impacts the quality of your sleep. There are several types of sleep apnea but the most common type is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA's most common symptom is snoring which is caused from the soft palate’s muscles relaxing that end up blocking your throat’s airway. As a result, this makes breathing labored and difficult, which is what causes the loud snoring sound.

These breathing stops cause the diaphragm muscles to work harder to pump air into the lungs. The stops can last for several seconds which briefly wakes up the person as their throat muscles work to “uncork” the blocked airways. However, these breathing interruptions are so brief that the person often doesn't realize they occurred. A person with OSA can stop breathing up to dozens or hundreds of times a night, which greatly reduces the quality of their sleep.

OSA symptoms include:
  • Snoring.
  • Short term memory impairment.
  • Aches and pains.
  • Morning headaches.
  • Daytime drowsiness.
  • Depression and irritability.
  • Low sex drive.

Treating OSA:

For patients with mild to moderate OSA, we recommend Oral Appliance Therapy. This type of therapy involves using a small oral appliance that is similar to a mouthguard. The patient wears it while sleeping to keep their airways open and prevent their throat muscles from obstructing their breathing ability. This allows the patient to breathe easier and leads to a better quality of sleep.
